Sporting Goods Company Migrates Critical Enterprise Workloads to Cloud

Global Sporting Goods Company
Challenge

Challenge:

Drive retail outlet operations and the supply chain by moving workloads from an existing data center to Amazon Web Services (AWS), while timing the transition with the expiration of a number of existing contracts.

Solution

Solution:

Custom solution encompassed a range of AWS capabilities, including infrastructure setup, database migration, testing and cutover, as well as disaster recovery with backup server capabilities.

Outcome:

  • Highly secure infrastructure setup.
  • High availability for the complete architecture.
  • Improved disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Migration of the 1TB in a PostgreSQL database.

Challenge

As the global sporting goods retailer with multiple brands continued to expand worldwide, it needed to move its work-loads from an existing data center to the cloud to support growth. As a first step in migration, the company wished to implement two applications that would drive retail outlet operations and the supply chain. Since the company’s entire global network relied on these applications, it needed to go live with minimum downtime and while preserving disaster recovery capabilities. It was also looking to time this transition to correspond with the expiration of a number of existing infrastructure contracts.

Why This Solution Provider?

The sporting goods retailer was looking for an AWS partner that was capable of handling critical enterprise workloads and possessed deep database expertise. The Cloud Migration Services team has several AWS accreditations in these areas. The team was able to demonstrate a number of successfully executed migration projects that aligned with the retailer’s needs and ensured that the solution would be secure, cost effective and reliable (see Figure 1).

The Solution

Team architects assessed the sporting goods retailer’s existing framework and provided a custom solution that leveraged a range of AWS capabilities, including infrastructure setup, database migration, testing and cutover.

The retailer’s AWS environment has web components (including retail and supply servers) and database components [employing the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS)]. High availability for relational database servers (RDS) was implemented using the AWS RDS’ native multiple availability zone or multi-AZ capability. Finally, disaster recovery for the database was implemented by configuring the read replicas in one region and providing a solution to create backup servers in another region.

AWS Services Used

The Cloud Migration Services team made strong use of various AWS offerings, including:

  • VPC
  • EC2
  • ELB
  • CloudTrail
  • S3
  • RDS
  • CloudWatch (content delivery network or CDN and web application firewall or WAF)
  • VPN Connections

Solution Architecture

To leverage the benefits of the cloud for the sporting goods retailers, the Cloud Migration Services team restructured the company’s IT environment and migrated to AWS, as shown in Figure 2.

Business Benefits

The solution delivered by the Cloud Migration Services team provided the following benefits:

  • Increased security posture of VPC environments: The team conducted a security assessment of the sporting goods retailer’s existing virtual private cloud (VPC) environments. Then it implemented steps to increase the security posture of the VPC.
  • Improved disaster recovery capability: The sporting goods retailer previously stored database backups off-site, which limited its capacity to act quickly in case of a disaster. The team set up multiple availability zone databases with data replicated continuously to different AWS regions. As a result, its recovery point was reduced to nearly zero and recovery time was reduced to less than two hours.
  • Improved application high availability: Before the migration, the sporting goods retailer had only one availability zone serving the application from a single data center. This configuration constituted a single point of failure. After the migration, the company gained the ability to serve applications uninterrupted from two availability zones, using multiple load-balanced servers.
  • Reduced cost of database maintenance: The team migrated approximately 1TB of the sporting goods retailer’s application data to Amazon Relational Database Services. RDS provides a cost-efficient database solution and minimizes time-consuming administrative tasks, such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching and backups. This approach successfully reduced the total cost of ownership of the application database.
