Hitachi startete sein Informations- und Telekommunikationsgeschäft 1937 mit der Produktion von Telefonen und Telefonzentralen. In den 1950er Jahren begann Hitachi mit der Erforschung der Computertechnologie und brachte dann 1959 den Computer HITAC 301 für den geschäftlichen Einsatz auf den Markt.
