Garvan Institute Lauded With Hitachi Data Systems APAC Health and Life Sciences Innovation Award

Annual Awards Recognise Smart Use of Technology in Life Science Community

SYDNEY - August 28, 2013 - Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501), today announced that Australia's Garvan Institute of Medical Research, a world leader in biomedical research, was awarded the APAC Health and Life Sciences Innovation Award. The award recognises Garvan's innovative use of technology to better enable its researchers to study and develop cures for some of the most widespread diseases affecting our world today.

The life sciences community is in a unique position to directly improve the quality of human health through medical innovation, with cutting edge research, smart use of technology, and the clinical data it generates. Hitachi Data Systems created the Health and Life Sciences Innovation Award to recognise the unique contributions of innovators, and to show to their peers, the medical community and the patients they serve, how technology is transforming their businesses, lowering costs and ultimately transforming lives.

The Garvan Institute, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is one of the pioneers in genome research and sequencing with the aim to deliver personalised cancer research and treatment. The institute generates petabytes of unstructured data by genomic sequencing and other research areas such as bone density scanning. To process, store, and collaborate with all of this data, it has been successfully relying on a Hitachi infrastructure comprised of Hitachi NAS Platform (HNAS) with Hitachi Content Platform (HCP). The Hitachi solution allows Garvan to process high-throughput data with HCP so that their researchers have easy access to the data they need. Further extending its research team's collaboration capabilities, Garvan will also deploy the Hitachi private cloud-based, mobile data sync and share solution, Hitachi Content Platform Anywhere, on more than 100 smartphones and tablets.
