More than a decade into the Internet of Things (IoT) era, the immense potential of IoT is becoming real. We’re moving from proof of concepts and pilots to projects at scale. What’s become increasingly clear is the vast complexity of deploying IoT solutions at scale and the necessity to do so to become a data-driven business.

Through the industrial solution cores in the Lumada platform, our extensive domain expertise, strong partnerships with cloud leaders, and complementary acquisitions, Hitachi is making it easier for companies to digitalize all areas of their business. And we’re pleased to see these efforts recognized not only by customers but industry-leading analysts.

These recognitions come only weeks after Gartner named us as a Leader in the 2021 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Industrial IoT Platforms for the second consecutive year.

Data-Driven OT requires IoT Strategies

According to Chief Executive, nearly 70 percent of CEOs surveyed said they are in the midst of digitalization efforts. IoT is core to that, whether it’s called Industry 4.0, digital transformation or business transformation. The mandate to shift to a data-driven business requires IoT at the foundation to gather the data, but IoT has become so much more. The key is what you do with the data, what insights you get from it and how you can use that to improve your business.

Everest Group, a leading global research firm for IT, business processes and engineering services, defined IoT as everything from the perception layer of sensors and wearables to infrastructure, network and analytics, all the way up to smart software and enterprise systems. Everest Group categorized Hitachi as one of only two suppliers in its Leader category in the 2021 Internet of Things Supply Chain Solutions PEAK Matrix® assessment.

Many companies have seen IoT success stalled by siloed thinking and lack of clarity of business issues and ROI goals. At Hitachi Vantara—Hitachi’s digital infrastructure, data management and analytics, and digital solutions arm—we see the IoT evolution manifesting outcomes in four core ways:

  • Digitalization and transition to data-driven business
  • Running and transforming operations
  • Building more resilient businesses
  • Establishing data-driven sustainability and operational efficiency strategies

We’ve delivered data-driven outcomes for customers like Logan Aluminum where we accelerated their digital transformation journey and boosted productivity and quality; Maple Leaf Foods where they modernized their consumer-packaged food production through IoT solutions. We’re also bringing IoT to farming and agriculture to help enable sustainable banana farming, as well as productive, profitable and sustainable livestock farming.

IoT Critical to Improving Business Outcomes in Smart Manufacturing

Smart Manufacturing is one of the most significant examples of how companies are leveraging digitalization to become data driven. In its Smart Manufacturing Platforms Competitive Ranking, ABI Research recognized this transformation and highlighted Hitachi Vantara’s IoT and data solutions innovation within the Lumada platform. Hitachi is one of the world’s largest manufacturers and we’re able to optimize our data and digital solutions across Hitachi as well as with our customers. Hitachi Vantara accelerates time to value from digitalization by bringing together the Lumada IIoT platform, more than 110+ years of OT/manufacturing experience, more than 60 years in IT infrastructure and several decades of consulting expertise.

The core of our strategy has been expanding the breadth, depth and differentiation of our IoT solutions. Our focus has been on developing innovative IoT solutions that leverage our data management and analytics technology to improve business outcomes for areas like manufacturing, smart spaces, transportation and energy and utilities. We are also taking a collaborative go-to-market approach built around strong partnerships. We’re bringing our expertise and leadership in manufacturing and industrials to create solutions accessible on Amazon’s AWS and Microsoft Azure platforms.

According to ABI Research, “All leaders – PTC, Siemens, Telit, and Hitachi Vantara – have notable strengths when it comes to digital twins, low-code app development, and connectivity/protocol adaptability… Hitachi Vantara is strong in edge intelligence and enterprise cloud integration with a customer base that puts it in the top three suppliers.”

IoT delivers the most value when integrated across an enterprise’s operations and the next leap in IoT is the continued scaling of change across facilities, processes, supply chains and the entire business. Let’s go create the next generation of IoT innovation together.
