The Challenge: Find Advanced Big Data Analytics Capabilities for Usage-Based Insurance

The telematics technology leader wanted to further their leadership position in the usage-based insurance (UBI) market, where a remote sensor in a car or smartphone app monitors the customer's driving performance so insurers can adjust rates accordingly. This means they needed advanced real-time big data analytics capabilities.

The company also sought an easy way to pull from a set of industry insurance data that was growing by 1.6 billion data points per day. Furthermore, that data had to be presented in real time from different databases that track driving behavior (speed, acceleration, braking, cornering, gas mileage, and so on), vehicle data (VIN, engine rpm, battery voltage, DTC codes, and so on) and trip data (distance, time and date, and GPS location).

The telematics technology leader needed access to all driver data, as they wanted to provide insurers with the ability to monitor their UBI programs' success. They wanted to enable drivers to understand how their improved, and safer driving behavior could positively impact the environment. This concept evolved into what the company calls the Business Center, which allows insurers to manage the growth and health of their UBI programs by providing responsive dashboards and data visualizations. The Business Center also empowers customer support teams to better manage programs by providing integrated support tools for customer support representatives to investigate and manage issues.

The telematics technology leader leveraged the entire Pentaho platform, from data collection, management, and predictive analytics to data visualization capabilities. Hitachi Vantara's big data integration and analytics solution was able to provide a complete ETL tool and embeddable analytics. Additionally, Pentaho provided LDAP compatibility and a flexible security model that supported their privacy needs. The extensible Java-based platform was able to accommodate integration needs that the telematics technology leader had for future big data technologies.
