Challenge: Optimize the use of the company’s Mainsaver application by integrating more data and creating more reports.
Solution: Pentaho Data Integration and Pentaho Business Analytics automate data processing and improve access to data.
Spidex business intelligence, enabled by Hitachi Vantara, brings insights and efficiencies to asset management solution.
Spidex Software is recognized as an award-winning software seller and distributor of computerized maintenance management solutions. As Spidex was expanding, the company wished to attain greater information value from its Mainsaver application.
To get more out of their data sources, customers needed to integrate Mainsaver application data with other data. Spidex needed a platform that would provide data integration and analytics to optimize customer data and their data warehouse.
Spidex BI incorporates Hitachi Vantara’s Pentaho business intelligence solution to deliver reporting, analysis, dashboards, and data-integration capabilities. The breadth of the Pentaho solution's capabilities allows Spidex to provide demonstrable incremental value to their customers, increase their competitive advantage, expand their footprint in customer accounts, and drive incremental revenue to new prospects and existing customers by delivering integrated BI success.
Through their OEM agreement with Hitachi Vantara, Spidex has access to enablement, training, and third-level support. The company utilized the full platform, from reporting and dashboards to data integration.
Hitachi Vantara’s software enabled Spidex Software to increase revenue streams with cross-sell and up-sell opportunities from new applications to existing customers. Once Spidex Software deployed the Pentaho solution, the company saw an increase in margins from their low-cost, commercial, open-source model. The Hitachi Vantara solution is easy to integrate, with its standards-based architecture. This allowed Spidex Software to introduce the solution to the market in a short amount of time.
Spidex Software’s success is a good example of how third-party technology and services companies are working with Hitachi Vantara to deliver integrated solutions that provide more value to customers and drive incremental revenue for partners. Spidex BI is designed to operate out-of-the-box with Spidex products, with minimal installation time, no training and no customization. It offers users a powerful analysis dashboard that delivers real-time performance data on all the important engineering metrics, including work order management, labor usage, stores control and expenditure vs budget. Drill-down functionality lets users isolate the root cause of recurring problems, reducing hundreds of man-hours in administration time.
One of the first Spidex customers to take the new BI module was Simpson's Malt, the largest privately owned malt producer in the U.K. Chief Engineer Pat Richards shared his initial impressions.
"Spidex BI is well-presented, easy to use and enables us to analyze our engineering data in far greater detail than we were able to do previously. Using Spidex BI's drill-down functionality, we were able to identify and correct a significant problem that may otherwise have remained hidden – and that was just in the first week! I have no doubt that as our knowledge and usage of Spidex BI develops further, the module will prove itself invaluable."

"Pentaho BI technology has helped Spidex develop a compelling new offering for modern, efficiency-focused engineering teams and has unquestionably helped secure some recent wins. Early adopters among our existing installed base are already using Spidex BI and the word seems to be spreading. We have many more customers wanting to discuss this exciting new product with us in the coming months." - Jonathan Starling, Managing Director, Spidex Software
